AMD has launched the Radeon Navi graphics cards RX 5700 XT and RX 5700 in reference design. Custom models from the AIBs will be available in mid-August.

The dilemma with the radial fan

AMD did it again with Navi. After the Radeon VII was equipped for the first time with a reference cooler with three axial fans, many fans hoped that the radial fans would finally be history at AMD. Nvidia has shown the way with the Turing series and built a Vapor Chamber cooler with two axial fans on the Founders Edition. When the first pictures of the new Radeon Navi GPUs RX 5700 XT and RX 5700 appeared, the disappointment was big. AMD again relies on a radial fan design. The first tests show that it is loud as expected.

Scott Herkelman, Vice President of AMD and General Manager of the Radeon Business Unit, has now commented on the unfortunate issue of fans. He posted a statement on Reddit and thus reacted to many other Reddit threads that had the fan as their topic. According to Herkelman, AMD wanted to make sure that the Radeon Navi graphics cards would run as well as advertised on every single computer. This would only work with a radial fan design, since not every computer has very good cooling.

Future reference designs also as axial version, Navi-Custom designs starting in mid-August

Herkelman also commented on some of the ideas of the Redditors. For example, he likes the idea of offering two different reference designs: one with radial fans and one with two or three axial fans. Herkelman also responds to the criticism that reviews are not allowed to go online before the market launch and states that he is working on it with his team. Finally, he comments on one of his own side blows to Nvidia. AMD will continue to trick Nvidia.

Right at the beginning of the post, AMD Vice President also announced when the first custom designs for navigation devices would be launched. In a good month, in the middle of August, it is supposed to be ready. This, too, encounters displeasure among Reddit users. Nvidia also manages to bring the custom designs onto the market at the same time as the reference design.

Meanwhile, only MSI of the board partners has announced which custom designs will be available for the Radeon Navi graphics cards. The company is also launching new series onto the market. The RX 5700 XT is available in GAMING X, EVOKE, MECH and AIR BOOST versions. The last-named is the cheapest blower design. The MECH series is intended for gamers with a minimalist but effective design. The EVOKE series is a new series designed specifically for content creators. There are no pictures yet, but it is supposed to be a metal design. This design should come only for the RX 5700 XT, the RX 5700 doesn’t get anything. Once again, the GAMING X-Series is the top model. If the design is the same as the one of the Nvidia GPUs, will be revealed later on.
