Today Nvidia finally introduced the new Nvidia Super-GPUs. We have compiled all benchmarks and info for the RTX 2060 Super and RTX 2070 Super.

The Nvidia Super Cat-and-Mouse Game

With a teaser video shortly before Computex, Nvidia itself set the ball rolling around the Nvidia Super GPUs. Already at this point it was clear in a way – there will be new graphics cards. On the Computex itself there was nothing to see, contrary to expectations. Even on the E3 2019, which followed shortly afterwards, there was no announcement about what Nvidia Super is all about. Already after the Computex, however, a real cat-and-mouse game of leaks, rumors and information about the new graphics cards began. At first it was said that Nvidia could release new graphics cards for Gamescom.

However, it soon became clear that the Nvidia Super GPUs would probably be a counter to AMD’s Radeon Navi RX 5700 XT and RX 5700 graphics cards presented at the E3 2019. This was also confirmed by the first leaked technical data. Nvidia gives the current Turing lineup an upgrade in the form of more cores, faster and/or more memory. On top of that, the company is tackling its competitor AMD. The super GPUs come out of nowhere only very shortly after the RX 5700 XT and RX 5700 on the market.

RTX 2060 Super and RTX 2070 Super in detail

Since 8 PM ET the NDA of Nvidia is history, the first official data of the RTX 2060 Super and RTX 2070 Super can be named. The leaked data proves to be true. The RTX 2060 Super comes with 2,176 shader units instead of 1,920 shader units as in the normal RTX 2060 and 8 instead of 6 gigabytes of GDDR6 memory. The GPU model remains the same with the TU106. The RTX 2060 Super is equipped with the PCB including cooler and power supply of the former RTX 2070. The graphics card clocks on 1,470 MHz in base clock and 1,860 MHz in turbo clock. While the turbo has dropped slightly, the base clock has risen significantly.

It looks similar with the RTX 2070 Super. This comes with the TU104 chip of the RTX 2080 and will use 2,560 shader units. The memory remains the same with 8 gigabytes of GDDR6, but the RTX 2070 Super gets the PCB of the RTX 2080 and with it the larger Founders Edition cooler. The TDP has thus also risen to 215 watts. The clock has also risen. While the RTX 2070 still set to 1,410 MHz base clock and 1,815 MHz turbo clock, the RTX 2070 Super already reaches 1,605 MHz in the base clock and 1,890 MHz turbo clock rate.

Appearance of the Founders Edition

For the cooler, Nvidia again relies on the familiar Vapor Chamber cooler, which was also used for the other Founders Edition models. While the RTX 2060 Super stays with the small cooler, the RTX 2070 Super gets the big cooler with the PCB of the RTX 2080. Visually, the coolers differ only in detail from the former Founders Edition. Instead of a black middle section, there is now a reflecting surface with the model lettering. This was supplemented by the milled word “Super” in Nvidia green. The green lettering can also be found on the silver backplate.

Benchmarks and Performance

Since we have unfortunately not received any test samples of the Nvidia Super graphics cards in advance, we use the very detailed tests of our colleagues from ComputerBase.de for our performance analysis. All exact results can be read in their articles.

Nvidia itself has given something like a performance assessment for the two Super graphics cards released today. So the RTX 2070 Super should be as fast as the GTX 1080 Ti, while the RTX 2060 Super beats the GTX 1080. The upcoming RTX 2080 Super should even be as fast as the Titan Xp. For the RTX 2060 Super and RTX 2070 Super ComputerBase was able to confirm these statements. In its performance rating, the average of all gaming benchmarks, the RTX 2060 Super in Full HD and WQHD achieved seven and eight percent more FPS than the GTX 1080, respectively. The RTX 2070 Super, on the other hand, does a head-to-head race with the GTX 1080 Ti. On Full HD and WQHD, the two graphics cards are more or less on a par, only in UHD the GTX 1080 Ti beats the RTX 2070 Super by a good 3 percent.

The RTX 2060 Super and RTX 2070 Super were also able to clearly stand out against their own predecessors. The RTX 2060 Super achieves 13 percent more performance on Full HD and 15 percent more performance on WQHD. The distance between the RTX 2070 and the RTX 2070 Super is even greater. The Super GPU achieves 21 percent more performance under Full HD, 18 percent under WQHD and 20 percent at UHD than its non-super predecessor. The comparison with the Radeon VII is also particularly exciting. The RTX 2070 Super is superior in Full HD 6 percent and in WQHD 3 percent, only in UHD the Radeon VII wins by almost one percent. Also the RTX 2060 Super is not so far away from the Radeon VII. In Full HD the AMD GPU is only 11 percent faster, in WQHD 16 percent.

Conclusion: AMD has a Super Problem

With the Nvidia super graphics cards, Nvidia has fallen into the flank of its competitor AMD. In the last weeks and months AMD has built up a real hype about the new Navi graphics cards. The RX 5700 XT and RX 5700 should be faster and partly cheaper than the current Turing GPUs. Until shortly before the Computex, nobody expected Nvidia to simply expand the Turing lineup with two Super models.

The RTX 2060 Super and RTX 2070 Super perform extremely well in the tests. With 15 or even 20 percent more power compared to the Non-Super models, AMD has a tough opponent in front of it. It will be thrilling to see whether the RX 5700 XT can even approach the RTX 2070 Super. And Nvidia is also attractive again in price. The Founders Edition of the RTX 2070 costs $499, the Founders Edition of the RTX 2060 Super only $399. The two graphics cards have thus become significantly cheaper in terms of MSRP prices than their non-super counterparts. In the beginning there is only the Founders Edition, from July 9th the board partners may also sell the first graphics cards. The RTX 2080 Super will be released on July 23 and costs $699.
