Raspberry Pi 4 has 4K, two HDMI ports and 4 GB RAM

Today the Raspberry Pi 4 was introduced. The craft computer has a faster CPU, two HDMI ports with 4K/60 support and now up to 4 GB RAM.

Raspberry Pi 4: faster and better equipped

The Raspberry Pi-Foundation presented today the new version of its craft calculator, which is called Raspberry Pi 4. The popular single-board computer has once again developed significantly and now offers features that did not exist before. The basis this time is a Broadcom BCM2711 with four Cortex A72 cores at 1.5 GHz. This time either 1, 2 or 4 gigabytes of LPDDR4 RAM serve as the main memory, significantly more than the predecessor, which was only able to rely on 1 gigabyte.

The connections have also changed for the better. So the Raspberry Pi 4 now comes with two instead of one HDMI port. These ports rely on the HDMI 2.0 standard and can therefore output 4K material at 60 Hz. However, this only works with the HEVC codec. The ports are designed as Micro-HDMI – so an adapter is required. USB 3.2 Gen 1, the former USB 3.0, is also built into the Raspberry Pi 4 with four ports. For the network connections there is a Gigabit Ethernet interface and WLAN up to the 802.11-ac standard. In addition there is Bluetooth 5.0.

Raspberry Pi 4 needs more power

On the other hand, the power supply has changed a lot. The Raspberry Pi 4 now requires a power supply that can output at least 3 amps via USB. The voltage has remained the same with 5 volts, but instead of a Micro USB port, USB-C is now available. The remaining connections have also remained the same. There are also 40 GPIO pins, a micro SD card slot for mass storage and the usual connectors for cameras or displays. The size of the board has remained the same, but the two HDMI ports and a different layout for the USB and Ethernet ports have changed the equipment. This will probably also require a new housing.

At least in terms of price, the Raspberry Pi 4 remains attractive. The basic version with 1 gigabyte RAM costs a good 37 euros. With 2 Gigabyte 48 Euro are due, the 4 Gigabyte variant costs 59 Euro. For the start there is again a desktop kit consisting of the new Raspi, a mouse, a keyboard, an SD card, a suitable power supply including cable and a case for a good 125 euros.
