LG has introduced new UltraGear monitors at E3. These come for the first time with a response time of only 1 ms, despite the use of an IPS panel.

LG introduces monitors with 1 ms response time and IPS panel

The market for gaming monitors has really exploded in recent years. While in the past a very low response time (1 ms was the magic limit) was important, nowadays features like G-Sync and high refresh rates are the main requirements. Gamers are also attaching more and more importance to a good picture, which is why many manufacturers now also rely on IPS displays. The response time as an important characteristic value was pushed into the background, good IPS displays have a response time of 4 ms or more. In the end, the reaction time is probably just a marketing gag, which could now experience a revival again.

LG is also one of these monitor manufacturers that has been offering special gaming monitors for some time with the new UltraGear brand. At E3 2019, the company introduced two new UltraGear models: the LG 27GL850 and the LG 38GL950G. The two models with 27 and 38 inch size come with a main feature. Although both have built in a Nano-IPS display, the displays achieve a response time of only 1 ms (Grey to Grey). This has never happened before. But the monitors are also equipped with many other features.

G-Sync and G-Sync Compatible, HDR and other features

The LG 27GL850 is the smaller of the two monitors. It comes with a 27-inch nano-IPS display that resolves with WQHD (2,560×1,440 pixels). The refresh rate is 144 Hz. LG doesn’t use a G-Sync controller in this model, but the company says that the 27GL850 is G-Sync Compatible. Thus FreeSync support is also on board. The color space for DCI-P3 should be 98 percent covered, the backlight is bright enough for the HDR10 standard at 350 cd/m². On the connection side, LG uses two HDMI ports and one DisplayPort. A USB 3.0 hub with two ports is also included.

The LG 38GL950G is aimed at fans of widescreen monitors. The Nano-IPS display is 37.5 inch, curved and has a resolution of 3,840×1,600 pixels. For the refresh rate, LG generally sets to 144 Hz, which can also be overclocked to 175 Hz. The 38GL950G comes with support from Nvidia G-Sync and a 450 cd/m² bright display. This also makes it possible to support DisplayHDR 400. Like its little brother, it also supports Wide Color Gamut with 98 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 color range. The ports include an HDMI port and a DisplayPort, and the display also has a USB 3.0 hub with two ports. In addition, there is a built-in RGB lighting called LG Sphere Lightning 2.0.

The two LG UltraGear displays will be available for pre-order in the USA from 1st of July 2019. In Europe, monitors will be launched in the course of the third quarter.
