Nvidia is planning a complete refresh of the Turing series. The RTX 2080 Super will receive the chip of the current 2080 Ti. Announcement is on June 21.

Nvidia Super: what to expect?

Already before the Computex Nvidia teased something new in a video with the title “Something super is coming…”. What exactly that is is still not entirely clear. The leaks, however, indicate that these may be new graphics cards. These could be a new counterpart to the just introduced AMD Navi GPUs RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT. At Computex 2019 there was no announcement or first information. After that, however, the rumor mill started to work. According to initial information, Nvidia is launching faster and cheaper versions of the RTX 2060, RTX 2070 and RTX 2080. These should already be presented at E3 2019. E3 is almost over, tomorrow is the last day of the exhibition. Nvidia Super GPUs are still missing every trace.

The question is therefore what Nvidia wants to achieve with the teaser and the current rumors. Nvidia plans new graphics cards, this is almost fixed, because something else wouldn’t make sense. The only question is what we can actually expect. After all, Nvidia allegedly even makes a loss with the current lineup per graphics card. Graphics cards without raytracing are also not an option, as the technology is used more and more in games and is pushed by Nvidia as THE Turing feature. According to a new leak, however, there could be much faster graphics cards.

RTX 2080 Super comes with chip and VRAM of the 2080 Ti

As wccftech claims to have learned from sources in Taiwan, Nvidia is planning a whole series of new graphics cards with Super. This will completely replace the current RTX 2000 graphics cards, so there will be significant discounts during the transition phase. It already becomes interesting with the lineup, which Nvidia allegedly plans. Accordingly, there should be a super version of every graphics card of the RTX series. In addition, there is also an RTX 2070 Ti SUPER. wccftech emphasises that the nomenclature is not yet set, but assumes the names RTX 2080 Ti SUPER, RTX 2080 SUPER, RTX 2070 Ti SUPER, RTX 2070 SUPER and RTX 2060 SUPER.

Even more exciting is the performance the Nvidia Super graphics cards are supposed to deliver. According to the source, the manufacturer raises each graphics card to the next level without changing prices. The top stage in the form of the RTX 2080 Ti Super gets a completely new chip, the performance is still unknown. The RTX 2080 Super receives the chip of the RTX 2080 Ti and 11 gigabytes of GDDR6 memory. However, the number of cores is still unknown, but should be between the current RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti. A new intermediate stage is the RTX 2070 Ti Super, which, like the RTX 2080 Ti Super, will receive a newly developed chip. It is only known that it has 8 gigabytes of GDDR6 memory. Among them is the RTX 2070 Super, which receives the chip of the RTX 2080. However, the number of cores should be between the current RTX 2070 and 2080. The memory remains the same with 8 gigabytes of GDDR6. The same applies to the RTX 2060 Super. This comes with more cores than the current RTX 2060, but also with 8 gigabytes of GDDR6 memory.

Now only unlocked chips

There will also be some changes in the general approach. While Nvidia used to sell two variants of the GPUs (A and Non-A chips) and the Non-A variants could not be factory overclocked by the manufacturer, this procedure is completely omitted for the Nvidia Super GPUs. The chips can be overclocked as desired by the manufacturers. There should also be no pressure to use reference boards with predefined VRMs. Every board partner is free to develop his own and thus significantly higher quality boards including better VRMs.

Prices remain the same, presentation on June 21st

In terms of prices, Nvidia will be guided by the current prices of the Turing lineup. Thus, the super variants cost the same as the current RTX 2000 series counterparts with higher performance. Only the prices of the RTX 2080 Ti Super and the RTX 2070 Ti Super are still unknown, because they will be based on new chips. wccftech also has a presentation date at hand. Nvidia will present the graphics cards on June 21st. The date is allegedly not fixed yet, but the approximate period should be set. In the first wave, Nvidia focuses on the Super versions of the RTX 2060, 2070 and 2080. The RTX 2070 Ti Super and the RTX 2080 Ti Super start at a much later point in time.

At this point we want to point out that this is an unconfirmed leak. The sources are trustworthy according to wccftech, but we could not verify the information through our own sources. The leaks should therefore be taken with caution. In the course of June there will certainly be more information about what Nvidia Super is all about.
