World War Z: Radeon VII and RX Vega 64 with Vulkan are above the RTX 2080 Ti

AMD GPUs are generally very well compatible with the Vulkan API. In World War Z the Radeon VII and the RX Vega 64 even beat the RTX 2080 Ti.

AMD GPUs often dominate games with Vulkan API

The graphics card market is currently in a rather one-sided situation. Since Nvidia has introduced the Turing generation, AMD is again clearly more inferior than before. The RTX 2080 Ti is the new performance peak. Even with the Radeon VII released in February, AMD doesn’t reach the top and in many cases is even below the RTX 2080. Also the graphics cards below in the form of the RX Vega 64, RX Vega 56 or RX 590 have to struggle with new Nvidia GPUs of the GTX 16 series.

The reason for this can often be found in the API chosen by the game developers. Many games rely on Microsoft’s DirectX APIs version 11 and 12, in which Nvidia is strongly specialized. The situation is different with the Vulkan API. Here AMD dominates in many cases. These games are rather rare, however, how strong the difference can be is now shown by detailed benchmarks of World War Z.

Even the RX Vega 64 beats the RTX 2080 Ti under Vulkan

The Russian magazine GameGPU has subjected the recently released game World War Z to a very extensive benchmark test. A special feature of the game is that the API can be switched from DirectX 11 to Vulkan. GameGPU has tested both APIs in combination with an Intel Core i9-9900K and compares the results, which are more than impressive.

Under Vulkan, the Radeon GPUs are far superior under Full HD and WQHD. Both the Radeon VII (192 FPS FHD, 133 FPS WQHD) and the RX Vega 64 with water cooling (183 FPS FHD, 129 FPS WQHD) or with air cooling (169 FPS FHD, 119 FPS WQHD) beat (mostly) the RTX 2080 Ti from Nvidia, which achieves 160 FPS in Full HD and 122 FPS in WQHD. Only at UHD resolution the GeForce flagship does perform with 73 FPS ahead of the Radeon VII and the RX Vega 64 LC (= liquid-cooled) with 69 FPS each and the air-cooled RX Vega 64 with 64 FPS. Even if you set the RTX 2080 Ti to DX11, the Radeon VII is still one tick faster, at least in Full HD resolution.

The AMD mid-range also impresses

The RX Vega 56 also fights its way up to the RTX 2080 Ti and achieves the same minimum FPS under Full HD. Under Vulkan, it is superior to the RTX 2080 and only has to admit defeat at UHD resolution by two FPS, but is on a par with the GTX 1080 Ti here. Also worth mentioning are the results of the RX 590 and RX 580. The former performs in Full HD and WQHD above the RTX 2070, while the RX 580 performs only just below. In UHD, however, both cards with 43 (RX 590) and 39 FPS (RX 580) have to subordinate themselves to the RTX 2070 with 46 FPS.

The results clearly show that the API can play a decisive role. The developers of World War Z took this into account and integrated both APIs into the game. This allows both Radeon and GeForce GPUs to play to their strengths.
