Today the Nvidia entry-level graphics card GTX 1650 goes on sale. It takes on the heritage of the GTX 1050 Ti and competes with the Radeon RX 570 from AMD.

GTX 1650 is the name of the lowest Turing GPU

With the GTX 16 series, Nvidia has achieved a true masterpiece. The graphics card series is based on the Turing architecture, but the GTX 1660 and 1660 Ti offshoots have no Turing hardware in the form of tensor and RT cores. This saves enormous costs, but the advantages of the architecture remain. Efficiency continues to be unbeaten. The GTX 1660, for example, is happy with a TDP of 120 watts, but definitely achieves the performance of the RX 590, which is specified at 220 watts TDP. The prices are also a good argument for the GTX 16 series. For a good $250 you get a GTX 1660 Ti, which performs better than the GTX 1070 of the Pascal series and can even compete with the RX Vega 56.

After the GTX 1660 Ti and GTX 1660 only a beginner graphics card was missing. The GTX 1650 released today is a representative of exactly this class and replaces the GTX 1050 Ti. Nvidia itself prefers to stack a bit low and promotes the GTX 1650 with 70 percent more performance than the GTX 1050. However, the graphics card plays in a different league, the “real” predecessor is still the GTX 1050 Ti. This is also shown by the technical data.

896 CUDA cores clock up to 1665 MHz

The GTX 1650 comes with significantly more shader units than its predecessor. The GTX 1050 Ti has only 768 CUDA shaders, while the 1650 has 896 shaders. The clock rate is also much higher. The GTX 1650 clocks at 1,485 MHz in base and 1,665 MHz in boost. These are the reference specifications, as always there will be a large selection of overclocked partner cards. In terms of memory, however, the new graphics card clearly resembles its predecessor. Four gigabytes of GDDR5 memory are still installed. It is connected with a 128 bit interface.

The technical data clearly show the large gap to the GTX 1660, which has 57 percent more shaders with 1,408 shader units. On top of that comes 50 percent more memory, which is connected via a much faster 192-bit interface. But the GTX 1650 doesn’t compete against the GTX 1660 either. The main opponents will probably be the RX 570 and possibly even the RX 580 4 GB. With an MSRP of 149 US dollars, however, it could have a hard time, as the 8 gigabyte version of the RX 580 is already available for a good 160 bucks.

No tests possible yet

Usually we would have presented a summary of the first test results at this point. However, Nvidia has not released a pre-release graphics driver in spite of existing test samples. The driver will also start today, so the first test results should arrive in the next few days. We’ll keep you updated. If you don’t want to wait, you can order the first models of the GTX 1650 at Newegg or Amazon.
