GTX 1660 Ti: Turing without Turing features
Yesterday, Nvidia revived a brand that had already been believed dead. With the new GeForce generation, codenamed Turing, the company has actually completely replaced the GTX lettering with RTX. This should point to the raytracing capabilities which, together with DLSS, are the new main feature of the Turing generation. Unfortunately, the performance has not really increased in relation to the price.
But with the GTX 1660 Ti this changes again. The GTX lettering is back and points to missing raytracing capabilities. This is the biggest non-feature of the new graphics card. Despite Turing architecture and 12nm structure width, the GTX 1660 Ti comes without raytracing hardware. The tensor and RT cores are completely missing, so cheaper prices should be possible. A leak that also the GTX 1660 Ti should be equipped with 192 tensor cores for DLSS did not prove to be true.
All that remains is the GDDR6 memory, which at 6 gigabytes has the same capacity as on the GTX 1060 or the RTX 2060. The memory clock is at 6,000 MHz to set the graphics card slightly apart from the RTX 2060, which also has 6 gigabytes of GDDR6 memory, but clocks at 7,000 MHz. At the heart of the GTX 1660 Ti are 1,536 CUDA cores, which clock at 1,500 MHz in the base clock and 1,770 MHz in the boost clock. In this constellation, the graphics card easily reaches the level of the GTX 1070, but rarely reaches the RX Vega 56. For a price of 279 to 349 US dollars, the GTX 1660 Ti is currently still rather unattractive in price. But as soon as the prices fall below $250, the card is probably unmatched in this range. We have summarized all custom models that are available from now on.
Overview of all GTX 1660 Ti-Custom models
Asus is entering with three models of the GTX 1660 Ti into the race. The company also offers the most expensive model of the entire series. The Asus ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1660 Ti OC comes in the familiar Strix design with three fans and a large 2.5 slot cooler. Among them is the smaller Dual version with two fans and a short PCB, but a long cooler. With the Phoenix design, Asus is once again offering a model for the mini ITX sector. This is currently also the company’s cheapest custom design.
Asus has also not let itself be tainted with the technical data. So all models come overclocked. While the small Phoenix design uses a 1,815 MHz boost clock instead of the 1,770 MHz reference boost, the dual version uses 1,830 MHz. The biggest design of course also works best and comes with a full 1,890 MHz boost clock. On the connection side, the Strix version has two HDMI 2.0 and two DisplayPort 1.4 ports. The Phoenix and Dual graphics cards come with two HDMI 2.0, one DisplayPort 1.4 and one DVI port.
Further versions of the ROG Strix as Non-OC and Advanced Edition, one OC version each of Dual and Phoenix and also two TUF versions with two small fans and clock rates of 1,800 and 1,830 MHz (OC version) are planned.
As with the RTX 2060, the manufacturer EVGA also relies on the well-known triple slot design for the GTX 1660 Ti. The two models available in Europe carry the addition XC Gaming and XC Black Gaming and come as short single fan graphics cards. The cooler is three slots high and is actively cooled by only one 100 mm axial fan. EVGA doesn’t use a backplate, but the clock rate is quite respectable. The XC variant clocks in boost to 1,845 MHz. Only the XC Black clocks to the standard clock of 1,770 MHz, but should offer enough room for overclocking due to the same cooler. On the other hand, EVGA is stingy when it comes to connections. There is only one HDMI 2.0 port, one DisplayPort 1.4 and one DVI port. Currently not available is the EVGA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti XC Ultra Gaming, which comes with two fans in a two-slot design and boosts to 1,860 MHz.
Gainward has two of the cheapest GTX 1660 Ti to offer. The models with the names Pegasus and Pegasus OC come as dual-slot graphics cards with only one fan and are accordingly short. This saves the manufacturer some costs, which is why the graphics cards are currently available for 279 and 289 US dollars respectively. The non-OC version remains at the standard clock rate of 1,770 MHz, while the Pegasus OC card reaches 1,815 MHz. Unfortunately, Gainward was also stingy with the connections for this series. Only one HDMI 2.0 port, one DisplayPort 1.4 port and one DVI port are available. Later, a variant called Ghost will also be launched, which has two fans and resembles the two-fan design of the Phoenix series.
Gigabyte is currently represented with the most model variants on the market. The company is sending five different cooler variants to the GTX 1660 Ti competition. The top model is the AORUS GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. It comes with a two slot high cooler with three 100 mm axial fans. It also has the best clocking chip, which has a boost clock of 1,890 MHz and is therefore on a par with the Asus ROG Strix version. The Gaming OC version comes with a slightly smaller cooler and three 90 mm axial fans. It clocks up to 1,860 MHz in boost. There are also two models with two fans. The Windforce OC version comes with 100 mm fans, while the OC version is only equipped with 90 mm fans. The maximum boost clock is 1,845 resp. 1,800 MHz. Also for the mini ITX market there is a card with the name Mini ITX OC. It clocks at 1,785 MHz in boost mode and is also slightly overclocked, but comes with only a 90 mm axial fan. With the connections Gigabyte is generous. Each graphics card has three DisplayPort 1.4 and one HDMI 2.0 port installed.
Inno3D is currently only sending one model of the GTX 1660 Ti into the race. It is called Twin X2 and comes with two fans. These have a diameter of 90 mm, which makes the card relatively short. In contrast to the RTX models, the cooler is kept in black and there are few other surprises. So the model clocks to the reference boost clock of 1,770 MHz. A backplate is mounted on the back. However, the company does not save on connections in an exemplary manner. Three DisplayPort 1.4 and one HDMI 2.0 port are installed. The Inno3D GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Twin X2 is one of the cheaper cards with a price of 290 US dollars.
KFA2 also starts the GTX 1660 Ti series with just one graphics card. The company, which trades outside Europe as GALAX, relies on the well-known fan design with two transparent 90 mm fans and 1-Click OC, but without RGB lighting as with other models. The boost clock is 1,800 MHz and thus slightly above the reference clock. However, this can only be unlocked via the 1-Click OC function. KFA2 dispenses on a backplate. The company has also saved on connections and only uses one DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0 and one DVI port. Later, an EX version is also planned with RGB lighting, backplate and a boost clock of 1,815 MHz.
With currently three models, the manufacturer MSI is represented in the GTX 1660 Ti series. The company relies on the Armor OC, Ventus XS OC and Gaming X cooler variants. All models come with two 90 mm axial fans and differ mainly in cooler design and clock. The high-end model Gaming X with RGB lighting and eye-catching radiator cover is also the fastest. The chip clocks up to 1,875 MHz in boost. But the smaller models are also impressive. The Armor OC version reaches 1,860 MHz boost clock, while the Ventus XS OC reaches 1,830 MHz in boost. MSI is not stingy on the connection side and provides all three graphics cards with three DisplayPort 1.4 and one HDMI 2.0 connections. A backplate is also built onto each graphics card.
In the course of time, more models will come onto the market that MSI already lists. There will be non-OC models of the Armor OC and Ventus XS OC. A smaller model of the Gaming X variant is also planned. In addition, there are two Aero ITX models with only one fan for the mini ITX area.
Palit starts like its partner brand Gainward with two small, inexpensive models with a 100 mm fan. These are called StormX and are almost identical to the gainward cards. The non-OC version comes with a reference clock of 1,770 MHz, while the StormX OC operates with a clock of 1,815 MHz. Also the prices of 279 and 289 US dollars are identical. Unfortunately, the connectors are also identical and the Palit graphics cards also only use one DisplayPort 1.4, one HDMI 2.0 and one DVI connector. A version with two fans and a bigger cooler will follow soon.
PNY also relies on only one model with one fan at start. The graphics card with the name PNY GeForce GTX 1660 Ti XLR8 Gaming OC relies on a dark design with a very short PCB and a 100 mm axial fan. The boost clock is 1,815 MHz. The graphics card currently shares the lowest price of 279 US dollars with some other models. Only one DisplayPort 1.4, one HDMI 2.0 and one DVI port are available as connectors. Further models are not in sight at the moment.
Zotac starts with two models of the GTX 1660 Ti. The smaller model does not get a special designation, the larger model carries the well-known name AMP. Both models come with a short cooler with two fans. At first sight the radiators are the same, but at second sight there is a small but subtle difference. What at first looked like a bend in the optics is actually a smaller fan. In the non-AMP version, Zotac does not install two 100 mm fans, but one 100 mm and one 90 mm fan. The AMP version gets two 100 mm fans and is therefore considerably longer. While the AMP version is also equipped with a backplate, this is missing in the non-AMP version.
The biggest difference is of course the clock rate. Thus, the Zotac Gaming GeForce GTX 1660 Ti only clocks to the reference clock of 1,770 MHz in boost. Zotac has not yet announced the clock speed of the AMP version, and the graphics card is not yet available anywhere. But with a higher TDP of 130 watts, the graphics card could easily clock beyond 1,850 MHz. Fortunately Zotac is not stingy in the display connections of both GTX 1660 Ti models. Three DisplayPort 1.4 ports and one HDMI 2.0 port are available.
