The rumors about a GTX 1660 Ti from Nvidia are getting really intense. Now four MSI GeForce GTX 1660 Ti were listed at the Eurasian Economic Commission.

GTX 1660 Ti: Is it meaningful or nonsense?

GTX is dead, long live RTX! That was the slogan for the presentation of the new Turing graphics cards at Gamescom 2018. With the RTX brand, Nvidia paves the way for real-time raytracing. The RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080, RTX 2070 and RTX 2060 are equipped with own hardware components, the tensor and RT cores. In addition to the normal shaders, these are only responsible for real-time raytracing calculations. However, this makes the graphics cards much more expensive. Particularly in the mainstream market, the RTX 2060, which is actually the logical successor of the GTX 1060, no longer corresponds to the mid-range profile. At $349 , it is simply too expensive for the mainstream. That’s why Nvidia digs up the GTX brand again and brings new models below the RTX 2060, which are based on Turing, but don’t have any raytracing hardware. The GTX 1660 Ti, which has already been leaked several times, is said to be the first model.

It is questionable to what point it makes sense to revive the GTX brand. On the one hand, raytracing is not yet fully developed. On the other hand, the beginning has to be made at some point. It would have been consistent, however, if Nvidia had pushed the RTX brand through to the smallest series and built in raytracing hardware. However, this would have meant that the small graphics cards would also have had to achieve useful raytracing in some way. But the technology is simply not yet ready. In order not to leave the mainstream market to the competitor AMD without a fight, the GTX brand is now coming back.

GTX 1660 Ti from MSI listed at EEC

How serious Nvidia is about the GTX 1660 Ti is now confirmed by a first listing at the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), which has meanwhile disappeared again. It is about four models of the board partner MSI, specifically the Gaming Z, Armor, Ventus XS and Gaming X models. These are probably the first offshoots of the GTX 1660 Ti from MSI. According to the listing, these are all equipped with 6 gigabytes of graphics memory. In the last leaks it was also mentioned that a GTX 1660 without Ti was planned. This differs only in the graphics memory used and comes with GDDR5 instead of GDDR6.

That MSI registers the first graphics cards at the EEC is no longer a real surprise. It is interesting that the whole range of coolers can be found on it. This confirms that Nvidia is bringing the GTX 1660 (Ti) onto the market as a fully-fledged series and not only for OEMs or the Asian market, for example. The cards might come in February already. Prices were also leaked. The GTX 1660 Ti is supposed to come onto the market for 279 US dollars, while the GTX 1660 will cost 229 US dollars. Which prices will be charged in Europe is not yet known.
